Grjótagjá Cave

Grjótagjá is a small lava cave in the Lake Mývatn area containing geothermal water. It was once a popular bathing place among local residents.

During volcanic and geothermal activity between 1975 and 1984, the water temperature increased substantially and bathing has not been considered suitable since.

The cave remains a popular stop where visitors can look into the clear geothermal water and experience the volcanic landscape of the Mývatn region.
