Woodland at Kirkjubæjarklaustur
The wooded slopes above Kirkjubæjarklaustur, on both sides of Systrafoss waterfall, provide a beautiful setting dominated by birch and Sitka spruce. The woodland is a popular recreational area for residents and visitors.
Forestry history
Forestry has a long history here. Local landowners fenced the slopes above the village and planted approximately 60,000 birch saplings. Additional tree species were introduced later, together with walking paths and resting areas.
Walking trails
Paths wind through the woodland and follow Systrafoss uphill towards Systravatn lake. Another trail leads to Sönghellir, a cave beneath the cliffs west of the waterfall.
Visitors can enjoy lush vegetation, rock formations and views over the village. Benches and picnic tables are available along the woodland paths. Some trails climb steep slopes and require appropriate care.
