Glerárdalur is a large protected recreation area above Akureyri in North Iceland. The area was protected in 2016 and covers approximately 74 km². Its purpose is to protect the landscape while supporting outdoor recreation, nature observation and education.
The valley and surrounding mountains show strong evidence of glacial erosion and contain varied rock formations, vegetation, rivers and mountain landscapes.
Glerárdalur rises above Akureyri and connects naturally with outdoor areas such as Hlíðarfjall. The nearby Súlur mountain is another major landmark in the area.
Mountain conditions can change quickly, so visitors should monitor the weather, use recognised routes and respect the wilderness.
The purpose of protection is to conserve Glerárdalur and its surrounding mountains for outdoor recreation, nature viewing and education while protecting diverse geological formations and vegetation.
