Fjallabak Nature Reserve is one of Iceland's most diverse and dramatic highland landscapes. The reserve was established in 1979 and covers more than 446 km².
The area is characterised by colourful rhyolite mountains, black lava fields, geothermal activity, lakes and wilderness. The reserve protects exceptional geology, landscapes, ecosystems and largely undisturbed highland nature.
Landmannalaugar is at the heart of the reserve. Popular places include the Laugahraun loop, Brennisteinsalda, Grænagil and Bláhnúkur. Visitors can also experience the Landmannalaugar hot spring.
Off-road driving is prohibited. Weather and road conditions can change rapidly in the highlands and visitors should follow marked routes and conservation guidance.
The purpose of the reserve is to protect distinctive geological features, landscapes, ecosystems and wilderness in the Fjallabak area.
