Búrfell er 669 metra hár móbergstapi í Þjórsárdal. Fjallið hefur myndast undir jökli ísaldar og er annar útvörður Þjórsárdals. Þjórsár rennur austan með fjallinu og við suðurenda þess eru fossarnir Tröllkonuhlaup og Þjófafoss í ánni. Nú hefur Þjórsá verið virkjuð við Búrfell og er svokallað Bjarnalón norðaustan við fjallið. Fallorkan nýtist í Búrfellsvirkjun.

Búrfell er bratt á alla kanta, þó síst að norðan en þar liggur vegur upp á topp fjallsins. Þar er endurvarpsstöð fyrir farsíma. Við suðurenda fjallsins er öxl nokkur skógi vaxin og kallast þessi birkiskógurBúrfellsskógur. Gnúpverja hafa í gegnum aldirnar haft skógarítök í Búrfellsskógi. Kristinn Jónsson, frá Úlfsá í Eyjafirði, sem gekk villu vegar suður Sprengisand árið 1889 fannst í Búrfellsskógi af Skriðufellsbændum sem voru við skógarhögg.

Austan í Búrfellshásli er gil eða gróf sem kallast Stórkonugróf og hefur þar fundist leifar fornrar smiðju.
