Brynjudalur Forest in Hvalfjörður

Brynjudalur Forest is a scenic woodland in Brynjudalur valley beside Hvalfjörður. Native birch, planted trees and surrounding mountains create a varied landscape.

Forestry history

During the 1970s, the Icelandic Land Reclamation Fund acquired much of the Ingunnarstaðir property. Approximately 50 hectares were fenced to protect remaining woodland and support new planting. Since around 1990, the Icelandic Forestry Association has focused on Christmas tree cultivation and recreational facilities.

Nature and forest products

The forest is known for its berries, including bilberries, blueberries, crowberries and stone brambles. Timber has been used for paths, shelters and firewood.

Walking and facilities

Woodland paths connect with longer hiking routes towards Þingvellir via Leggjarbrjót, Glymur waterfall and the Botnssúlur mountains. Shelters and picnic clearings provide places to rest. Mountain hikes require suitable preparation.
