Vinaskógur – The Friendship Forest
Vinaskógur is a unique woodland on the Kárastaðir property near Þingvellir National Park. It is dedicated to friendship and peace between nations, with trees planted by visiting foreign heads of state.
History
The forest was established in connection with Iceland's national afforestation initiative, supported by President Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. Queen Elizabeth II became the first foreign head of state to plant a tree here on 26 June 1990.
Many other world leaders have since participated in ceremonial tree planting. The President of Iceland serves as patron of the forest, while the Icelandic Forestry Association oversees its management.
Trees and vegetation
Downy birch and rowan have been planted in the forest, while willow species have spread naturally.
Walking and memorials
An accessible walking path passes through the small grove. Memorial stones identify visiting dignitaries who have planted trees, making Vinaskógur an unusual combination of nature and diplomatic history.
