Tumastaðir Forest in Fljótshlíð
Tumastaðir is an important forestry area in Fljótshlíð, approximately nine kilometres from Hvolsvöllur. Once almost entirely treeless, the landscape has been transformed into extensive woodland with diverse tree species, walking paths and resting areas.
Forestry history
The State Forestry Service established a nursery at Tumastaðir in 1944. That same year, Lýðveldislundurinn, or the Republic Grove, was planted with Sitka spruce. It became one of Iceland's earliest substantial Sitka spruce stands.
Trees and vegetation
Sitka spruce has performed particularly well here. The arboretum also contains unusual species, including ash, oak and hemlock. The forest demonstrates how sustained planting can transform previously treeless land.
Walking and access
Woodland tracks provide opportunities for walking and exploring the forest. A resting area is located near Lýðveldislundurinn. Tumastaðir lies on the northern side of road 261 in Fljótshlíð.
