Kverkfjoll is a dramatic mountain and geothermal region on the northern edge of Vatnajokull. Volcanism and geothermal heat beneath and beside the ice have created a distinctive landscape of mountains, glacier terrain, geothermal areas and varied geological formations. The region is remote, with access generally limited to the highland summer and suitable vehicles. Travel requires careful preparation because of weather, glaciers, rivers and geothermal hazards. Kverkfjoll lies within Vatnajokull National Park and its natural environment is highly sensitive.
