Kringilsárrani Nature Reserve is a remote protected highland area north of Vatnajökull. The reserve was established in 1975 and covers almost 64 km². It contains wilderness, glacial rivers, vegetation and landscapes strongly shaped by glaciers.
The area is particularly important as grazing habitat for Iceland's reindeer. Its landscape has been influenced by nearby Brúarjökull, and the retreat of the glacier has left behind distinctive glacial formations.
Kringilsárrani forms part of the wider wilderness surrounding Vatnajökull National Park and Vatnajökull Glacier. Another major landmark in the wider region is Snæfell.
This is a remote highland environment with limited services and potentially demanding conditions. Visitors should be well prepared and avoid unnecessary disturbance to vegetation and soils.
