Búðahraun Nature Reserve protects a large lava field near Búðir on the southern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The area was protected in 1977 and covers just over 10 km². Lava formations, rich vegetation and coastal scenery make it one of the most interesting natural areas in the region.
Old routes cross the lava field and visitors can explore geological features including Búðahellir Cave. The landscape was created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago.
The famous Búðir Church stands close to the reserve. Other nearby destinations include Arnarstapi and Hellnar, making Búðahraun easy to include in a wider trip around Snæfellsnes.
