The short-eared owl is the only owl species that breeds regularly in Iceland. It is a medium-sized owl with striking yellow eyes and is mainly associated with open country, wetlands and grasslands.
It feeds mainly on mice and other small vertebrates. Unlike many owls, short-eared owls are often active in daylight, particularly during the Icelandic summer.
