The common shelduck is a large and striking waterbird with a mostly white body, dark head and red bill. It is mainly associated with coasts, tidal flats and shallow water.
It feeds on small invertebrates in mudflats and shallow water. The species is relatively scarce in Iceland but occurs regularly and breeds in small numbers.
