The red-necked phalarope is a small and colorful wader commonly found in
Iceland during summer. It prefers ponds, lakes, and wetlands. The species is
unusual in that females are more brightly colored than males.
Its diet consists of small aquatic invertebrates and insects. Red-necked
phalaropes breed in northern regions and spend the breeding season in
Iceland. They are a distinctive part of Iceland’s birdlife.
