Northern Wheatear

The northern wheatear is a common migratory bird in Iceland and among the earliest arrivals in spring. It prefers open landscapes, moorland, and rocky areas. Wheatears are often seen perched upright on stones.

Their diet mainly consists of insects. They nest in cavities and rock crevices. The northern wheatear is a strong symbol of the Icelandic summer.

Insects, spiders, larvae and other small invertebrates; also berries in late summer.

Cavities and crevices in rocks, lava fields, banks and structures.
