Reindeer

Reindeer are the largest wild land mammals in Iceland and are found only in East Iceland. They were introduced in the 18th century and have adapted well to the harsh highland climate. Reindeer often form herds, especially during winter.

Their diet consists of lichens, grasses, and shrubs. They migrate between summer and winter grazing areas. Reindeer are an important part of Iceland’s natural and cultural heritage.
